Bản chất thực sự của vật chất, những đặc tính của vật chất, bản chất thực sự của tâm và những đặc tính của tâm tồn tại trong thân của một người không thể được biết đến chỉ bằng cách đọc về chúng. Chúng cũng không thể được biết đến bằng sự phân tích dựa trên lý thuyết. Chúng chỉ được biết đến bằng cách thực hành thiền satipaṭṭhāna. Liên quan đến thiền tập, Đức Phật đã sử dụng từ lakkhaṇā. Nó có nghĩa là ‘đặc tính’ hoặc ‘tướng.’ Ngài phân biệt giữa ba loại đặc tính: 1) sabhāva lakkhaṇā, 2) saṅkhata lakkhaṇā và 3) samaññā lakkhaṇā. “Sabhāva saṅkhata samaññā — ba loại lakkhaṇā.”
SABHĀVA LAKKHAṆĀ (ĐẶC TÍNH RIÊNG)
Trong số ba thuật ngữ này, chúng ta hãy xem xét từ sabhāva trong sabhāva lakkhaṇā. Trong từ sabhāva có hai phần, ‘sa’ và ‘bhāva.’ Sa — cụ thể, riêng; bhava — tự nhiên; theo nghĩa đen, đó là những gì xảy ra và đang có mặt. Một cái gì đó tồn tại hoặc đang hiện hữu, được gọi là ‘bhāva’ trong tiếng Pāḷi. Chúng ta hãy nói rằng bây giờ trong thân này, hơi nóng xuất hiện. Hành giả biết hơi nóng này nếu anh ta quan sát nó với sự tập trung chú ý. Nó được biết đến bởi vì nó đang tồn tại. Nó xảy ra trong thân này. Nếu nó xảy ra trong thân này, nó tồn tại. Đó được gọi là bhava trong tiếng Pāḷi. Phẩm tính tự nhiên của sự nóng này chỉ được thấy trong hỏa đại hoặc yếu tố nhiệt độ được gọi là tejo trong tiếng Pāḷi. Nó không tồn tại trong bất kỳ loại bản chất thực sự nào khác. Nó chỉ liên quan đến tejo. Đó là riêng. Do đó, người ta nói: “sako bhavo sabhāvo.” Sako — riêng; bhāvo — tự nhiên, xảy ra và tồn tại. Hơi nóng, lạnh, ấm và nhẹ chỉ liên quan đến yếu tố tejo. Chúng không liên quan đến các yếu tố khác. Trong số những dhamma trong tâm, tâm biết. Sự biết chỉ liên quan đến những dhamma trong tâm (những danh pháp). Trong số các danh pháp, phẩm tính tiếp xúc chỉ liên quan đến xúc, phassa. Nó không liên quan đến các danh pháp khác. Thọ chỉ liên quan đến trạng thái tâm được gọi là vedana, không liên quan đến các dhamma khác. Bản chất riêng của các danh pháp và sắc pháp được gọi là paccakkha, được kinh nghiệm trực tiếp. Các phẩm tính hoặc thực thể cụ thể, riêng được gọi là sabhāva. Trong tiếng Anh, chúng cũng có thể được gọi là ‘true nature’ (bản chất thực sự), ‘individual nature’ (bản chất riêng), hoặc ‘specific quality’ (phẩm tính riêng).
SAṄKHATA LAKKHAṆĀ (ĐẶC TÍNH ĐIỀU KIỆN)
Trong kiếp sống của một người, các phẩm tính tâm và vật chất thể hiện theo cách này không phải là không có nguyên nhân. Chúng phát sinh do nhiều nguyên nhân. Không có chúng sinh quyền lực nào đã tạo ra chúng. Để giải thích về những nguyên nhân này sẽ tiêu tốn khá nhiều thời gian. Chỉ cần nhớ rằng mọi sự vật và hiện tượng phát sinh do những nguyên nhân thích hợp. Bây giờ, sư đang phát ra âm thanh. Âm thanh được tạo ra khi hai yếu tố cứng, trong trường hợp này, một yếu tố cứng bên trong cơ thể và một yếu tố cứng do thức tạo ra, va chạm vào nhau. Sau đó, âm thanh được tạo ra. Nếu không có sự cứng trong cơ thể, hoặc nếu có nhưng nó không va chạm với một yếu tố cứng khác, thì sẽ không có bất kỳ âm thanh nào cả. Nhưng khi những thứ cứng chạm vào nhau thì âm thanh được tạo ra. Trong trường hợp này, các âm thanh do tâm tạo ra. Điều này rất rõ ràng. Các hiện tượng tâm và vật chất (danh pháp và sắc pháp) xảy ra như là nguyên nhân và kết quả được gọi là saṅkhata trong tiếng Pāḷi. Saṅ — do nguyên nhân tương ứng của nó; khata — đã được tạo thành. Mỗi danh pháp và sắc pháp có ba sát na tồn tại: sinh, trụ và diệt. Ví dụ, hành giả tập trung vào bụng và quan sát. Ở giai đoạn khi trí tuệ bắt đầu sinh khởi, vị ấy nhận thức được sự khởi đầu của sự phồng lên. Đó là khoảnh khắc bắt đầu. Khi bụng phồng lên và có sự căng cứng, đó là một đặc tính tự nhiên, sabhāva lakkhaṇā. Trong trường hợp này, sự khởi đầu chỉ là một khoảnh khắc ngắn ngủi của sự phồng lên. Nó chỉ hiện hữu trong một sát na thôi. Sau đó, nó biến mất. Sự xẹp xuống bắt đầu. Nó chỉ kéo dài một sát na rồi biến mất. Trong thân này, sự nóng bắt đầu xuất hiện. Nó kéo dài một sát na rồi biến mất. Sự nhấc nảy sinh. Nó chỉ kéo dài một khoảnh khắc, rồi biến mất. Những khoảnh khắc ngắn ngùi đó của sự sinh, kéo dài một khoảnh khắc rồi lại biến mất hết lần này đến lần khác được gọi là saṅkhata lakkhaṇā. Yogi (hành giả) không cần phải quan sát chúng một cách có chủ ý. Chúng có mặt mỗi khi bản chất thực sự sinh khởi. Ngoài ra, chúng không phải là bản chất thực sự.
SAMAÑÑĀ LAKKHAṆĀ (ĐẶC TÍNH CHUNG)
Samaññā lakkhaṇā có nghĩa là tất cả sự cứng, mềm, thô ráp, nhẹ nhàng, chắc đặc, lỏng, chảy, nóng, lạnh, ấm, chặt, đầy, thấy, nghe, ngửi hoặc nếm không tồn tại y như cũ, sau khi chúng phát sinh. Mọi sự vật và hiện tượng đều diệt đi. Chúng đều có cùng bản chất như vậy. Các đặc tính phổ quát được gọi là samaññā. Nói một cái gì đó xuất hiện, sau đó biến mất, hoặc sinh lên, rồi diệt đi, giống như nói nó được sinh ra và sau đó chết đi. Mỗi khoảnh khắc, các danh pháp và sắc pháp được sinh ra bởi vì các điều kiện kết hợp với nhau và sau đó diệt ngay lập tức. Chúng được sinh ra, sau đó diệt ngay lập tức. Những thứ sẽ diệt đi thì làm sao có thể tốt được? Chúng không tốt. Điều đó được gọi là dukkha. Chính ngay phương cách biến mất sau khi đã xuất hiện được coi là đau khổ và không tốt. Đó là một đặc tính xấu.
Con người không thể chỉ khiến những điều tốt đẹp xảy ra. Chúng chắc chắn sẽ phát sinh khi các nhân duyên hội tụ đầy đủ. Không thể ngăn chặn những điều xấu, nói rằng: “Cầu mong chúng không xảy ra!” Những điều xấu cũng chắc chắn sẽ nảy sinh khi các nhân duyên hội tụ. Không có gì xảy ra theo ý muốn của một người. Mọi sự vật và hiện tượng diễn ra theo tiến trình riêng của chúng. Không có bản ngã hay atta mà vận hành theo ý muốn của một người. Mọi thứ đều không có bản ngã cố hữu: anatta. Bất cứ danh pháp và sắc pháp nào phát sinh trong thân này, cho dù trong thân của chính mình, trong thân của người khác hoặc trong thế giới bên ngoài, tất cả đều giống nhau ở ba khía cạnh này. Những cách vận hành này được gọi là samaññā lakkhaṇā, các đặc tính chung hay phổ quát.
